The Journey for Justice went to Starke, not only to protest two million prisoners, but to ask Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida legislature to empower us to create an independent citizen's review board to focus on appalling corruption and inhumane conditions in Florida prisons. The Journey has received letters from over 200 prisoners describing physical and mental abuse and the methods the DOC uses to cover it up. For example, Gary Waid was disciplined for writing letters to the Miami Herald detailing conditions which led to the murder of Frank Valdes. The Journey believes EVERY person has human rights, and this is why the citizens review board is so badly needed.
By the way, in all the letters describing systematic abuses,
only one of the abusive guards named is under indictment.
