Traditional core and coil electromagnetic ballasts use transformer technology to generate high voltage 60 Hz lamp power. These ballasts are reliable and low cost but are not as energy efficient as the teohnologically superior electronic ballasts available today. The electromagnetic ballast itself has excessive core losses which generate heat and waste electricity. Also, fluorescent lamps operate with better efficiency at higher frequencies.
Modern electronic ballasts operate at a frequency above 20,000 Hz. This high frequency operates lamps more efficiently (10-15% more light output) and eliminates the hum and visible flicker normally associated with electromagnetic ballasts. Modern solid-state circuitry makes the electronic ballast practical, reliable and cooler running, Conversion of the AC powerline voltage to the high voltage required by fluorescent lamps is also more efficient at higher frequencies. Electronic ballasts begin their operation with an electronic filter that protects both the ballast and the powerline from radio frequency interference (RFl) and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The filtered AC is converted to DC by a rectifier and filter Filtered DC is converted to greater than 20,000 Hz AC with an inverter, The high voltage output of the invertor Is supplied to the lamp by the output current control circuit.
