DrugSense THIS WEEK     (Top)

IMPORTANT NOTES: We are still working on fine tuning the recipient database     (Top)for the DrugSense Weekly.  The database should be eliminating all duplicates but if you receive 2 copies this week please let us know by replying to this Newsletter or sending a message to

It is important to note that the new "short form" for quick sign up on the DrugSense web page should NOT be filled out by existing members who have already filled out the "long form" on the MAP web page.  Doing this will (or has ) wiped out all your detail info.  If you already did this please fill out the long form again so we have full info updated on you.  All "long form" MAP members will receive the newsletter unless they request otherwise.

We're happy to offer a slightly different format with this edition, one which we hope will make DrugSense Weekly even more user

friendly. Our "Highlights From MAPTalk" section will offer a     (Top)brief overview of each featured item instead of a complete reprint.  Links to our MAP WWW archive will allow easy viewing of the items which interest you.  Same comprehensive coverage as before yet easier on your IN box.

We'd like to know what our readers think of this and other features of DrugSense Weekly and we invite you to take a shot at writing a feature article.  Feel free to send comments/suggestions to our editor, Tom Hawkins,

Enjoy!

Tom Hawkins, editor

MAP NewsHawks NEEDED     (Top)

The Media Awareness Project has made remarkable strides in archiving current drug policy articles and letters to the editor from media sources world wide.  This is largely a volunteer effort and more help is always needed.

Newshawks look for drug policy items in their favorite newspapers and magazines and send them to our MAP editor, Kiril
Dubrovsky, to be included in the daily news summary and news archive.

Those interested in finding out more about becoming a MAP NewsHawk please see http://www.drugsense.org/active.htm

Please send any drug related articles you find in any newspaper of magazine to:

They will be synopsized for our daily DrugNews-Digest, saved for two weeks in our DrugNews archive, and then stored permanently in MAPNews for future review and research.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM MAPTalk

Subj:   SENT: New Scientist re: Passing the Megabucks

New Scientist

To the Editor;

If one were to judge from your June 29 comment on the historic cigarette deal reached between the industry and the Attorneys General of 17 American states, the title of your magazine is a misnomer.  Rather than New Scientist, it should be Old Humbug.

In order that you may better understand what we do, please visit our Web Site at:
http://www.angelfire.com/biz/acktivholdings/index.html We have visited yours and are pleased with the efforts of those like yourself, in the recognition of the impact and adverse effects drugs are having on this entire globe.

Dear Mr.  Ramjohn,

Thank you for your inane letter.  You have provided all of the members of the Media Awareness Project (MAP) with a prime example of what passes for "truth" among drug warriors.  Had you actually visited the MAP web site (http://www.mapinc.org/) you would have found that we are dedicated to "Moving the Discourse on Drugs from Hysteria to Sanity and Humanity".

Our existing drug laws are flawed, harmful to our society, and based upon inaccurate information and false assumptions.  MAP's objectives are designed to correct this situation by providing accuracy, reason and science in place of hysteria and hyperbole.

Subj:   SENT: The Blade RE: Drug help for adults called top

Just send this to The Blade in response to the article at:

To: The Toledo Blade
ATTN:   Reader's Forum

Your Sunday article about motivational speaker Milton Creagh appearing at the UT's student union auditorium to a crowd of 40, when the local DEA agent and police departments expected a thousand should not surprise anyone.

Except for a handful of diehard Prohibitionists, the public is starting to realize that just like the alcohol Prohibition, the Drug War Prohibition is not working, can not work, and is much more costly to our society and our freedoms than any problems caused by drug use.

Subj:   Kubby for Governor campaign
From:   Mark Greer

Talkers;

I have not seen much discussion on the campaign for Steve Kubby for Governor of CA on the Libertarian ticket.  I think this candidacy holds a good deal of promise for the reform movement.  If Steve is able to get any significant funding, he should be in a position to garner significant attention from the press.  The party has been building a nationwide organization for years and is certainly the strongest third party potential for the gubernatorial race in 1998.

WAYTAGO JERRY

Oakland Tribune circulation 90,000
Ad value about $300 AND a very effective tie in of an off topic subject.  New letter writers take heed there is a good lesson here. An article need not be about drugs in order for us to respond and get published.

Subj:   Questions asked of McC in SF

From:   (Tom O'Connell)
Date:   Thu, 3 Jul 1997 19:43:51 +0100

Yesterday, July 2, Barry McC, director of ONDCP, spoke and answered questions at a regular meeting of the Commonwealth Club of Northern California.  He outlined and justified the federal "drug strategy," in an updated talk that many members of DRCTalk are familiar with.  There were many supporters of drug reform in the audience.  most of whom wanted to raise questions about the federal response to 215.  McC fielded these questions quite well, indicating his continued skepticism about mj, but claiming that "science" is the best way to arrive at answers and that he is willing to await (gov't) scientists findings.  He took the same tack on needle exchange, of course ignoring the fact that needle exchange has been proven to be of value since 1993.  He also tacked on the requirement that needle exchange must be shown to reduce drug use before it could be acceptable.

Subj:   MAP 1, CADCA 0 - Another MAP Victory!

WAY TO GO, MARK! I heard the whole show very well over my computer's speakers.

It is too bad Kellie Foster of CADCA chickened out at the last second.  It is really clear that CADCA can not stand exposure to truth.

Mark sure got in enough plugs for our new web site, and Mike, I guess, repeated it:

http://www.drugsense.org/

If anyone did not catch the show, it should be posted to the following web address soon:

http://www.audionet.com/shows/pat&mike/

For anyone who is not set up to receive realaudio over the web, I will post hardware requirements, where to get the software, and instructions before the weekend is over to MAPTIPS, the MAP list for discussing topics of this type how to use our tools, and other subjects that may get "off topic" comments on other lists - its a great place for those just starting to get active].  So if you have not already, you can sign up now and catch the post by going to the signup form at:
